H2A Member Holthausen Taking Big Step in Hydrogen Production
H2A-member Holthausen announced yesterday that it will expand its electrolysis capacity in the Netherlands, including at its facility in the port of Amsterdam. This step increases the RFNBO-certified hydrogen Holthausen can deliver to the market. Director Carl Holthausen underlined the leading position of his company, stating, ‘We see ourselves as the speedboat of the energy transition: when we see something is needed, we want to follow through.’
One of the markets served by Holthausen is the road mobility sector, with a refuelling station in operation in the port of Amsterdam. Hydrogen has significant potential to contribute to the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport in Europe, complementing battery-electric initiatives. Hydrogen adoption in the European sector recently got a big boost, with the German Ministry of Transport announcing a subsidy package for the construction of new hydrogen refuelling stations and the procurement of hydrogen-fuelled trucks in Germany. The total value of the bids received (€455 million) more than doubled the available funding (€220 million). This signals strong market interest in building out the hydrogen infrastructure. Further announcements on the winners are expected in the coming months.
With the utilisation of hydrogen in heavy-duty mobility steadily taking shape in the Netherlands and Germany, Holthausen is in a good position to capitalise on this opportunity. Given the expected ramp-up in demand and the large volumes of hydrogen needed in the coming years, imports through the port of Amsterdam will be essential to ensure a steady and competitive supply.
