Port of Amsterdam

As the one of the largest ports in Northwest Europe, the port of Amsterdam is a leading player in the international world of transport and logistics, and has a long history as a strong energy hub. As part of the North Sea Canal Area, the port of Amsterdam benefits from direct links with miscellaneous industries, Schiphol Amsterdam Airport and the capital of the Netherlands. Its strategic and central location within Europe, combined with a multitude of transport modalities to ensure excellent connections, mean that the port of Amsterdam serves as a gateway to all major European markets.

With more than 68,000 people working in and around the port region and a total annual economic added value well in excess of EUR 10 billion, the port economy is a catalyst for economic development, regionally, nationally and internationally. On the back of the aforementioned strong energy cluster, Port of Amsterdam has set clear goals aimed at growth in the hydrogen economy, alternative fuels, sustainable energy sources and the reduction of CO2 emissions. By doing so, Port of Amsterdam seeks to secure its position as a gateway and economic catalyst for the region, the Netherlands and Europe, leading to the creation of sustainable economic and societal value.

Renewable energy and renewable raw materials are the essential pillars for the envisioned future of the energy and industrial systems. In order to buttress these pillars, Port of Amsterdam focuses on forming public and private partnerships and fostering collaboration along the entire value chain, thus accelerating the energy transition. In order to expand its strategic function as a European energy port, Port of Amsterdam continuously strives to develop new cargo flows, to expand its global network of connections by sea, inland shipping and rail, and to nurture strategic partnerships to produce, store and distribute sustainable energy vectors.

With the aforementioned in mind, Port of Amsterdam was one of the initiators of the H2A Association, with the express intent of bolstering the position of the port of Amsterdam as a hydrogen import hub. The import of hydrogen is a strategy priority and will be crucial for the desired decarbonisation of critical European industries. By combining forces with the companies and organisations in the vanguard of the hydrogen developments in the greater Amsterdam region, the timeline of development can be accelerated.

Within the H2A Association, Port of Amsterdam is one of the driving forces for the public profiling, the creation of strategic partnerships and the facilitation of the dialogue with public entities, on the national, European and international levels. The annual H2A Symposium is a great example of a unique event that showcases the central position that the port of Amsterdam is aiming to play in the import of hydrogen to the European mainland.

Port of Amsterdam works closely together with its clients and partners, both within and outside the H2A Association. Amongst the notable successes are miscellaneous international partnerships with countries of production for both LH2- and LOHC-corridors. These countries comprise both intra-European and intercontinental connections, linking Amsterdam to regions such as the Gulf, North Africa, Southern Europe and Scandinavia.

Finally, Port of Amsterdam has a strong focus on ensuring the supporting infrastructure and logistical connections are in place to transport imported hydrogen to the end users, both in the Netherlands and the (German) hinterland. This includes initiatives led by Port of Amsterdam to contribute to the development of needed regional pipelines and other transport facilities, close collaboration with German ports to create logistical connections for LH2 and LOHC, as well as supporting advocacy by the H2A Association to generate the needed public support and legislation.

Port of Amsterdam will continue to be an active partner of the H2A Association, as the members of the Association jointly pursue the realisation of a hydrogen import hub of national and European importance, making it crucial component of the decarbonisation of European industries.
