Het Noordzeekanaalgebied

The North Sea Canal Area (NSCA) in North Holland is emerging as a strategic hub for Europe’s transition to green energy, particularly in the development of the hydrogen economy. Situated along the North Sea coast and in close proximity to the large offshore wind farms being developed in the region, the NSCA has a unique advantage. By 2050, up to 70 GW of offshore wind energy will be transmitted onshore to the IJmond region, providing a significant source of electricity that can either directly power industry or be converted into hydrogen, close to its generation point. This positions North Holland as an ideal location to develop a thriving hydrogen economy.
The NSCA is one of the Netherlands’ most important industrial and port areas, connecting key economic zones such as the offshore manufacturing industries in IJmond, sustainable fuels and circular production in the Port of Amsterdam, and the food industry along the Zaan River. The region is also closely integrated with Schiphol Airport, a major international logistics hub. Despite its economic importance, the region faces substantial CO₂ emissions, around 15.2 megatons annually, including from energy production. To reduce these emissions and make industries, aviation, and shipping more sustainable, green hydrogen is a crucial solution.
Hydrogen offers a versatile range of benefits that are essential for a carbon-neutral future. It serves as a clean fuel for heavy transport and industrial processes, including aviation, shipping, and steel production, where high energy density is needed. Moreover, hydrogen is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in industrial applications, allowing for the reduction of direct CO₂ emissions. It is also an internationally transportable form of energy, which can be efficiently moved via pipelines or in liquid form, allowing the import of hydrogen from regions with abundant renewable energy sources. Additionally, hydrogen plays a critical role in energy storage and grid balancing, enabling surplus energy from solar and wind sources to be stored and used during peak demand periods.
The NSCA, together with the Port of Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport, forms a unique industrial-logistics ecosystem that is well-suited for large-scale hydrogen applications. This ecosystem includes offshore wind energy, energy-intensive industries, advanced energy hubs, and international aviation, creating a dynamic environment for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution. Recognized by the Dutch government as one of the country’s “hydrogen accelerator hubs,” the region is driving the development of hydrogen infrastructure, production, import, and storage, ensuring the timely availability of affordable hydrogen.
Collaboration is key to realizing the hydrogen economy, and the Hydrogen Hub Noord-Holland serves as a platform for industry, ports, grid operators, and governments to work together. By connecting regional, national, and European stakeholders, the hub plays a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to a hydrogen-powered future. Through joint efforts with industry players, research institutions, and international transport networks, the NSCA is building a carbon-neutral hydrogen economy that will contribute to the broader energy transition.
